ARTISAN
Where the metalwork of Tsubame meets the bronzeware of Takaoka — creating colors found nowhere else in the world.

About ARTISAN

When people think of traditional Japanese crafts, lacquerware or ceramics often come to mind.
Yet beyond those familiar images, Japan has another tradition — one forged over centuries through precision and patience: the art of metal craftsmanship.
Two cities represent this heritage: Tsubame in Niigata Prefecture and Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture.
In Japan’s Hokuriku region — a land known for its heavy snow — these crafts continue to be refined even today.
Tsubame has been a renowned metalworking town since the Edo period, celebrated worldwide for its expertise in processing iron, copper, and stainless steel.
Its polishing techniques are so advanced that even Apple Inc. has recognized their excellence, with the city’s precision craftsmanship supporting some of the world’s top brands.
Meanwhile, Takaoka is Japan’s largest producer of bronze ware.
Its coloring techniques, cultivated through the making of Buddhist altar fittings and tea utensils, give metal a life of its own — expressing subtle tones and depth through meticulous artistry.
It was the meeting of these two production centers, each rich in its own tradition and technique, that gave birth to ARTISAN.
Though close in distance, the collaboration between Tsubame and Takaoka unites their unique strengths — combining Tsubame’s precision metal processing with Takaoka’s traditional patination methods to create works imbued with Japanese elegance and an oriental vibrance.
Each piece is a one-of-a-kind expression of harmony between material and color, precision and emotion.

The “ORI-EN” Series

Beyond the Impossible — The “ORI-EN” Series
The signature “ORI-EN” series by ARTISAN took two years to perfect — a pursuit of achieving the ideal coloration once thought unattainable.
In traditional Takaoka metalcraft, the coloring-through-corrosion technique — immersing copper or brass into special solutions to naturally oxidize and create color — was never applicable to stainless steel, which resists corrosion by nature.
However, through the fusion of Tsubame’s stainless steel technology and Takaoka’s patination artistry, and after countless prototypes and failures, ARTISAN succeeded in developing a groundbreaking process to achieve beautiful, natural color on stainless steel.
This innovation stands as a symbol of Japanese craftsmanship that unites tradition and innovation — a challenge that transformed the impossible into reality.
Today, this technology continues to evolve, expanding into new fields and applications, breathing new life into the world of metal art.
The works of ARTISAN are the miraculous fusion born from Japan’s long history of engaging with metal — a crystallization of beauty and persistence.
They embody the spirit of Japanese engineers and artisans: an unyielding curiosity and refusal to give up.
The light that radiates from each finely crafted surface is not merely reflection — it is the glow of modern craftsmanship rooted in tradition, a brilliance that continues to captivate the world.
